This week’s challenge from the Daily Post is to take a selfie – or self portrait – with your camera or camera phone.  This photo was taken on the good ship Rode Trip, back in Grand Cayman when Brian and Stephanie invited us on their boat for a little trip up to the North Sound.  A supposed one day trip that became extended and turned into one of the best slumber parties a 30 year old could ask for.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Family

Family.  A basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not.

In this weeks challenge from the Daily Post we’re supposed to define our interpretations of family.  For myself, I’m going to very literally, show my own family.  Now that we’ve been cruising for about 16 months, in various parts of the US and Caribbean, we haven’t been able to see as much of our family as we’d like.  It was quite a drastic change going from living with Matt’s mom and step-dad for the last year before we left, seeing them each and every day, to now seeing them twice a year, when they’re sweet enough to fly down and surprise us, or when they graciously allow us to steal the spare bedroom back when we come home for a visit.

Then there’s my parents, who have been traveling to various spots around the country and even globe for my dad’s job, before settling down in Mesa Arizona just a few years ago.  Even before Matt and I left, I was restrained to seeing them only once or twice a year ever since 2005 when they left our hometown to spend a few years in Vietnam.  Coming home once a summer to visit family, they’ve also been charitable enough to fly me out to see them the past few years in Arizona to spend some much needed quality time together.

Family is something you don’t often think of when they’re right next to you, but let me tell you, they shoot up to number one on your list of priorities as soon as you lose easy ways to connect and visit.  Most of the time if I’m ever feeling sad or lonely while we’re out traveling, my thoughts turn instantly to my family and how everything would instantly be better if I could have them by my side.  They’re definitely mine and Matt’s anchor in our lives, and we couldn’t be more thankful to have them.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Windows

Window.  An opening for the admission of air or light, commonly fitted with a frame containing panes of glass.

Weekly Photo Challenge: windows

For this weeks challenge on the Daily Press we’re focusing on windows.  This was a shot taken while wandering down the streets of Trinidad, Cuba.  Even though nothing in this town was new, there was amazing beauty at every surrounding.  Even this closed off door with it’s painted over windows was enough to make me stop in my tracks and spend a few moments staring.  Even though it was in no way new, it was simple, elegant, charming, and I could not take my eyes off it.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unexpected

Unexpected. Surprising or unforeseen.

peace sign in Grand River, Grand Rapids Michigan

For this week’s photo challenge from the Daily Post, we are supposed to share something that’s unexpected.  After having been gone from Grand Rapids for 12 months while we sailed our boat from Muskegon to Guatemala, it was nice to be able to come back home for a visit.  I know this city is growing rapidly and has a penchant for the arts, having a brand new art museum and hosting the annual Art Prize competition, but as I crossed the bridge over the Grand River on the way home my fist afternoon there, I came across an unexpected sight.  Somebody had found a shallow spot in the river and piled hundreds of rocks together to form a peace sign and a heart.  It brought a smile to my face and is just one more reason for me to miss this amazing city.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Layers

Layers. A thickness of a material spread over a surface.

Not really much of a back story for this week’s photo challenge from the Daily Press.  This is a shot of when we were having a relaxing Saturday afternoon on the Bay of Honduras, soaking up some rays.  Over land, many clouds were forming of various shapes and sizes, and layering themselves upon one another. As long as they did not layer themselves over me, I was quite happy.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Habit

Habit.  An acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary.

The topic for this week’s photo challenge by the Daily Post talks about habits.  ‘The stuff of the everyday – places we go, things we do, people we see’.  When you live on a boat, constantly traveling from one place to another, these regular habits become less and less.  It’s rare that you’ll visit the same place over and over again.  People that you see on a constant is even rarer.  (Unless like in our case, you team up with a buddy boat for a few months at a time)  So that leaves, things we do.

Even that is hardly routine in our new lifestyle.  Sure, there are things you do often: lift the anchor, raise the sails, stare off at the horizon as you try not to get sick….   But the fact that we haven’t done any of that for almost five months now shows just how ‘habitual’ it can all be.  For the moment we’re in the ‘sit at a marina, finish random projects, occasionally dart into town for more Pepsi’ kind of groove.  Which, in a few days, will be changing yet again as we hightail it out of Guatemala and back to the Azul waters of the Caribbean.  But in this mis-mashed ever changing world we live in, I can never escape one certain stability .  There will always be a sink full of dishes waiting to be done.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Eerie

Eerie.  So as to inspire superstitious fear.

This week’s photo challenge from the Daily Post is all about eerie.  These photos were taken back at a set of trails near where we used to have our house, a popular spot to walk our dog on the weekends.  Even though you could usually guarantee you’d be the only person out walking about, these trails for the most part never usually felt eerie or frightening to me, even if I was by myself and it was getting close to dark.  (And no, I was not confident because of having my dog by my side.  As a greyhound, she would be the first to run away at any sign of danger, and at speeds much faster than me)

The only time these trails ever had a supernatural sense was in the late fall when all of the leaves had disappeared from the branches, but it was still too early for the snow to fall.  This would give an unnatural and barren feel to the normally lush land.  As if the there was no longer life left anywhere on earth, and you were the only human being remaining.  That no matter how far you searched, you would be completely isolated and alone.  And that thought, as I’d pass through this forsaken landscape, would scare the s#*t out of me.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Horizon

Horizon.  The space or line where the sky meets the earth.

You’ll have to excuse the randomness of this post, right while we’re traveling through South America, but I’m trying something new here on the website.

I have just come across a wonderful site called The Daily Post, and in it are weekly photo and writing challenges where a theme is given, and then you post that to your site and share it back to The Daily Post.  It sounds like fun, and I think I’d like to give it a try, considering I’ve got over 6,000 photos building up just from this past January.  So if you see a random photo with a description popping up on the site that has nothing to do with where we currently are or what we’re doing, fear not, I have not lost my mind.  Not that much anyway.

The photo above, you may recognize from our trip to Stingray City in Grand Cayman.  We were snorkeling in sandy and clear 3 foot waters as we watched, played with, and even fed the wild but somewhat trained stingrays of the area.  Weather was not cooperating as we had remnants of tropical storm Andrea blowing through, which made for some interesting sailing and dinghy trips, but also some great photos.  Here you can see Brian and Stephanie’s boat, Rode Trip, anchored in the distance.  It was well worth the 36 hour journey for what should have been a three hour tour.
